Our difficult "second album" kind of project is out. Today! All art was done by me, as usual. You can check the free demo on our website, watch the trailer, see screenshots.. read about all the extra stuff. And there's tons of it! This time we offer Collector's Edition and super-special Physical Limited Edition as well. Learn more at MoaCube

Solstice is a fantasy mystery thriller about small personal disasters that can turn into great catastrophes. Set in the middle of an icy desert, it features a varied (in many ways) cast of colourful characters. And a hidden mystery for you to solve. Also - lots of great humour and deep emotions, written by our awesome writing duo. Remember that if you decide to buy the game - all the money go directly to us. We're a small indie studio, just 4-5 people. So basically thanks to you, since 2011, we can still make games. What I mean by that - you're awesome!

The game is an interactive crime fiction with visual novel gameplay (meaning your decisions matter and shape the story, a LOT!). Can't say much more at this point without spoiling the story, but we think it's a pretty exciting experience.

What makes the game different from other titles, I think, are our characters. We went for variety and interesting backstories. So, no general cliches. We actually have older, mature people in game and some relationships are pretty complex. Influencing them shapes the story as well, sometimes to a pretty big extent - check the screenshots above and in the link below.

Guys, we finally decided to try get Cinders, our first game (with my art) on Steam. As some of you know, we are not a big studio, but rather a bunch of friends who make indie games and we would really, really appreciate your vote if you have a Steam account. The game has already been published in 2012, so it's not one of those early-access titles that never get to be finished. You can also try a free demo on our website. It's available for Pc & Mac.

Here's the Greenlight link (or just click on the picture above): Cinders on Steam!

Thanks!

As for other news: Solstice pre-orders (our next, upcoming game) are still open! It's a fantasy mystery game, and it is, of course, going to be awesome ;) All art was done by me, as usual. The preview build, which you can access instantly after supporting us, features around 2-3 hours of the game's beginning.

The whole game takes place in a city in the middle of an icy desert, pretty much cut off from the world. The city itself is surprisingly warm and seems to have its own micro-climate.

As for some other news.. I'm always behind most gadgets / social networks. But pretty recently I got a phone with Android and Instagram (yeah, I know, better late then never, even if it's not as "hip" now, as it used to be), and I started posting some random, everyday stuff. Including some sketches, cat, food etc. Since I'm really crap at posting more personal stuff on the web (I keep forgetting), this is probably one place where you can have some sneak peek into it. Even if it's lame.

Bookmark it especially if you're into seeing some more art wips from me, as I tend to forget to post any of those, and it takes me ages to find time to finish them. Here's the link to my profile: instagram.com/vinegaria/

Do you use it as well? If so, let me know what your profile is. And feel free to add me there, it'll make me happy!

Cheers, guys. Also all the best in the New Year (told you I'm behind with everything)!

Our first game as MoaCube is finally out!

It's our fairytale-inspired visual novel, ditching the passive protagonist and banal morals of the original story in sake of a more serious approach. You get to actually re-write the story of Cinderella and shape it in any way you want! We're really happy how it turned out and I hope you'll give it a try and like it too

I just got a note that my artwork got stolen.. Not only mine, I noticed some other artists' works there. I usually take care of such things in private, but in this case I'll make the exception, as it deserves it. I literally almost fell of my chair, laughing, when I saw that :D See for yourself:

Art theft by vinegar

Yes, I'm attaching this person's account name on purpose. After all she didn't feel bad to steal my art, alter it poorly and also claim she was the model for some of it, so why shouldn't I share her name in return? Seems only fair after all the hard work she put into it :D

Anyone knows how reporting works on Flickr? I never used it before.

Hey guys,

just a quick update, my new website is now officially up! Same address, completely new layout and some new content. For example - my general brush set and some new textured brushes. Also - a new blog that I plan to update often with various art sketches and other random things. Like food and photos of my cat, perhaps.

Website: vinegaria.com/ Blog: vinegaria.com/blog

Honestly I got tired of updating so many places and networks, so I plan to stick to mostly one place. I will re-post most posts and links to tumblr, facebook page and twitter, but my blog will be the first place I'll update. Maybe it'll force me to update more often.

Hope you'll like it!

Okay, it's been few years since I was ranting on DA but the time has come. Everyone has a pet peeve and mine is being told that "this looks like". I very often state that I use no refs for the faces and if I did, and certainly if it was somebody famous (as it would be very obvious, right?), I would write it in the comment. But no. Still many people assume it just has to be a portrait of someone, often someone I'm not even familiar with, just because this is their first impression. And yes, I get it they (mostly) don't mean anything bad. But to me, and you can call it overreacting, it feels like I'm being accused of art theft every single time it happens. Even if I know this is ridiculous (like when people accuse me of stealing my own art from myself, not checking their sources beforehand and, believe me, it happens quite often).

I know I'm sort of asking for it when trying to paint more realistic faces. Maybe it's also because every time I paint a portrait I try to give it an individual shape. Many artists often draw basically the same face, but I prefer to draw new faces every time. It's part of the fun for me. Maybe it forces people to look for non-existent references. I don't know. It actually happens in my more stylised, cartoony art too. Do I need to add that those examples given often have nothing in common between themselves? If I would be accused by a few people of portraying the same person - well then it could be understandable. I bet there would be an actual resemblance. But people choose ridiculous examples and all are certain this is exactly what I had in mind when drawing something.

If you're thinking "that means nothing, it's just a loose thought somebody shared with you, no idea why it bothers you so much" try to see it like that: You're uploading a set of costumes for your original characters that you invented 100%. And you get comments like "this looks like show xxx", "this reminds me of xxx". If they were your own ideas, indeed not having anything in common with those examples given (that you probably never heard of anyway) - that would certainly irk you as well.

Some examples:
Cleopatra by vinegar
This piece is apparently not even "similar to" but is a direct presentation of: Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Gina Torres. They have nothing in common when it comes to their faces (or this one), but I still feel like people suggest I overpainted photos of them all. Not a single ref for the face was used.

Ginger Nova by vinegar
This is Scarlet Johansson (who I really dislike, but that's another topic) and to be exact, this is her in Iron Man 2. Yes, they both have red hair. Face resemblance? None. But maybe I'm blind :|

Bite me. by vinegar
This one is the funniest. In reality it's a 15mins pencil sketch quickly coloured in photoshop, but it turns out that.. I stole it from myself (there is an older version in my gallery, usually I stole the older version from this one - no one bothers to check the dates and the same nickname). It's also a portrait of you (insert random goth chick). A portrait of your best friend (that I'm certainly very familiar with). Also - this one happened a few times actually and I still don't get it - Emilie Autumn. Yes, Emilie Autumn. The "red-hair", "completely different face and style" Emilie Autumn, yet I was told quite a few times this is a portrait of her. It's also "Re-L from Ergo Proxy" (no idea who that is), some goth chick from some tv series (insert few series I never heard of), Megan Fox (what?). I also have people accusing me that this one has too many favs. Well, I guess it's legitimate in a way, I have no idea why this piece is popular here. But it's the same like I have no idea why certain very crappy manga pieces are that popular (not because they're manga, but because they're really crappy). But I don't write it to the authors, because - believe it or not - artists don't choose the amount of favs they get. Like, really :/

Midnight Blues by vinegar
This is apparently Taylor Swift. Please take a look at her face. Very similar.

The selection of the above thoughts is random, just some newer ones. I remember there were even better ones, but I've no time to dig deeper and don't want to invent any.

Also the sort of comments that really make me die a little inside, all actual ones:

"WOW! this is so cool, amazing and beautiful.
Did you make this picture?"

(Of course I didn't, that's what this website is about, uploading other people's work to you gallery).

"art can't be stolen it, belongs to no one, where did you get it from?
in other words be glad if someone next week remembers your work, much less two years, two centuries"

(after me complaining that my piece was stolen more times that I can keep track and stating that I'm the actual author)

"i speak a bit of spanish but fluent english i like but she smokes i hate smokers i call them lung-cancer seekers"
Under Bite Me, just one example, but it happens often. What a great, insightful thought. Very needed. There's an actual skull-shape coming out of the smoke, but people still need to tell me that my character smokes (I kinda noticed while drawing her) and that smoking is bad. I never heard of it before, you know?

There's one more thing that really, really irks me here lately, e-soulu also wrote about it. People sending me notes with links to their works and some "smart" comment like "check it out" or "fav me". It' been a plague recently. I call it spam and I ignore ALL notes like that. Just so you know. Now don't get me wrong - if people ask me politely to visit their gallery and tell them what I think, wanting some honest opinion - I'm okay with that. Spamming me via notes with no "hi" or "please", just "do it"?  That's a different matter.

I've been on this website for ages. That means 8 years. That's a lot. Don't get me wrong - I love DA. I met many great people here, I dare say I helped quite a few too. I love your comments and I'm really sorry I can't reply all of them. But, even though I've been here this long, I'm the kind of person that still takes such things very much to herself. Give me 20 great comments and one comment like those above and it will ruin my mood and make me want to argue with you. And I have no time for that. So I'm really thinking about just disabling the comments, but still keeping my gallery up to date. Maybe it will solve some problems.. Although I'd miss having certain discussions with people here. Sometimes you ask the best things and it's pure pleasure to just discuss the topic..

Oh well, probably I won't do a thing. But I really felt the need to babble about it. Do those things irk you as well? Or is it just me?

Cinders is our indie game project as some of you already know. It's a visual novel that lets you replay the Cinderella fairytale but with various outcomes that you can choose and with a twist!
It's done mostly by Tom (game design and miracles) and me (art). Also with music by Rob Westwood and co-writing by Ayu Sakata, with some programming help from Marius Utheim. You can read more about all of us on MoaCube's website.

It's open for pre-orders just now! PC & MAC.

More info, trailer & links here: moacube.com/games/cinders/

When buying a pre-order you get access to the preview build (a short demo) and access to beta-test forums (so you can help us improve it). Also pre-order version is cheaper than the full game will be when released.

All graphics in game are mine (see examples below). That means when supporting the game you're directly supporting my career as an independent artist :}. You also support Tom, Cinders designer, buying me a box of kiwifruit so, you know, it's important. :ninja:

We talked about the whole issue and I believe we agreed we overreacted a bit on both sides. Just a bad day and lots of harsh words that were unnecessary. And I don't want to leave an entry here that leaves a bad impression about anyone.
Thanks for your kind words, though! They really helped when I felt down.

As for other news - I will soon share some linearts to colour and also free (yes!) stock photos for you to have fun with. By free I mean both commercial and personal use. I already posted some on my website, so you can see them there, along with terms of use, but more on that later.

Have a lovely evening! (or day)

Just a quick note to let you know I gave up and set up a tumblr account! I'd be very happy if you follow me there as well. :pointr: Cinders & MoaCube

As promised some time before, I have some info on our team and our first upcoming project - Cinders.

As some of you know already - after releasing Phantasmat we started our small indie team - MoaCube - with Tom, who was this game's designer and also with help of Rob Westwood, who is responsible for Phantasmat's great music. I'm responsible for all art in our new game - Cinders. It's going to be a visual novel that is letting you experience Cinderella fairy tale in a new approach - you can choose the classic ending, but you can also change the future of main character and everybody else. There will be many possible different endings, which should grant lots of replayability. It's a small project, but focused on high quality that is not very often seen in this genre.

Here are some screenshots & concept art to give you an idea of what we're aiming for:
Cinders - menu by vinegar
Cinders concept art. Home by vinegar
Cinders concept art. Voodoo. by vinegar

We aim to release this game around Summer 2011. Which will probably really happen around then, or we will starve to death. Starting an indie game team is fun, but is also a huge risk, so we could really use your support! We have a facebook page - www.facebook.com/pages/MoaCube… which we try to keep active with news  and also check our website moacube.com for news and info on this and other projects.

Let me know if you have any questions :) I'm basically working 24/7 on this project, so I'm not around very often, but I still try to lurk a bit here everyday.

:pointr: New publications

On a side note, I also got into new EXPOSE 9 and D'Artiste: Character Design books - I saw previews of those and I really recommend them to all interested in art. Especially new D'Artiste, as it features work of Guild Wars concept artist Kekai Kotaki (and their team is the best in the world) and also fellow DA member Gonzalo Ordoñez - GENZOMAN, who was kind enough to choose my piece for his section.

Take care!

Hey guys!

The game I've been working on - Phantasmat - is released and currently is #1 on BigFishGames! You can get demo on BFG website: www.bigfishgames.com/download-… or on official website: phantasmat.com/ where you can also see the trailer, additional screenshots etc. Currently only Collector's Edition is out, but soon there will be a Standard Edition as well - no bonus content and no additional gameplay, but smaller price.

You can see some of my concepts and art for game (I was one of two people working on art, did all the concepts, touched up most final locations, did all character art and puzzles and lots of stuff in between) on my blogspot here: vinegaria.blogspot.com/2011/01… Some more is posted on my website as well.

I hope you'll like it, it's my first PC game. Give it a try at least, it's free ;)

Now I'm going to work with Phantasmat's and Magi / ArcMagi's designer, Tom, on our first indie release! Check his Twitter twitter.com/TomGrochowiak (or mine) for updates and stay tuned for previews coming soon, I hope. Wish us luck!

Hey guys! :salute:

I finally gave up and set up a Twitter account, here: twitter.com/vinegaria

I'll use it to post news, updates and perhaps some random silly stuff as well. So I'll be delighted if you'd like to follow me there as well!

Some pretty exciting stuff is coming soon for those interested. My first adventure game is coming out soon and I'll be working with a friend on a very exciting project next, a 2D game with many different endings depending on player's actions. This time we're going indie - and that means lots of previews and pictures before release!

And I'm coming back to freelancing, after 2 years of having a day-job as a concept artist. That should mean more art to share more often, hopefully. I'm also thinking of maybe perhaps going back to taking private commissions as well (it's been years since I did that). Anyone interested? Let me know.

Wish us luck, guys. It's time of big changes and honestly I'm both excited and scared.

Okay, I rarely do this. Or actually I never do this. I was never into groups here, not that I don't like the concept, I just don't have enough time to be fully active on DA, not to mention groups in specific.

But so far most groups I see here do two things:
1. They try to look "elite".
2. They accept art that mostly looks like crap and that no serious, commercial client would ever buy.

Of course I don't mean groups collecting specific topic-related art (zombies, steampunk etc.) - in these I don't mind collecting crap, because even bad quality work can have lots of interesting ideas and be a source of inspiration. But whenever I see a group with purpose of collecting varied, high quality works and all I see is really mediocre stuff chosen by kids who can't see a difference between a painting and an overpainted stock photo with a smudge tool.. I'm just so not interested and go back to searching my favourite artists' faves for inspiration ;)

(Mind you, I like many photomanipulators, but it has to be something more than another stock photo of a lady in a smudged dress with a moon pasted in the background)

Anyway, as you can imagine I wrote it all because I ran across a really good group. Probably most of you know it already, but still, TheDigitalPainter group is so far the only place I found that collects high quality art and I mean it. There are many categories, varied styles, various themes, but still someone who manages it is able to pick noteworthy pieces in each of them.

Now, I have no idea who created this group, who members are and all that, they didn't contact me or anything, I didn't join the group (-> lazy.). But still, if you're like me: lurking to find some hidden gems and general good quality pieces, including interesting tutorials, this is one of the best I found:

:iconthedigitalpainter:

Yup. Enough of free commercials, back to work.
Cheers!

Anyway, I just wanted to say I'm really sorry I haven't replied to many comments and notes yet. I still keep them in my message center, I just can't find enough time lately to write anything, but I'll get back to all of you.

If you really want to get in touch with me about something specific it'll be probably quicker to reach my via email (the one on my website).

*EDIT* Just because I keep getting this question all the time, here is a rather (too) long post with my tips regarding advice on art and becoming an illustrator I might give you: vinegaria.blogspot.com/2010/08… (for those who didn't yet forget how to read these days).

Also I just set up a Formspring account here: www.formspring.me/vinegaria - just to give it a try, it might be fun and it might as well serve as some sort of faq maybe? So people won't keep asking me questions I already answered in pics' descriptions? Oh, wait. People don't read descriptions under pics, so why would they bother to visit Formspring and look for answers? Ah, kids these days. Anyway, it looks like fun, so I'm giving it a try.

Honestly, one thing that really bothers me is why people can't read and write with just a little bit of thinking. Is it really so hard to check your most obvious spelling mistakes? Or to read your post before sending just to make sure if it can make any sense to anyone except you? Most browsers have built-in dictionaries. Hell, I'm not english and I always double check my posts for mistakes, so that I don't seem like an idiot. But some people seem to click "post" without really thinking and I usually ignore comments "wirtten liek th1s". It never seems there would be any point in de-cyphering it anyway.

So, people - think. Please. Duh. Okay, sorry for ranting.

Now because I still have a sub, thanks to DragonRose215, here are some thumbs of pieces I just really, really loved recently:

Hey? Who got me a subscription? I just noticed I got one from someone here and I wish to say 'thank you', but I don't know who did it, as my mail didn't give me the nickname or any clue..

Okay, I rarely post, but when I do there's lots of things I want to babble about

I have some trouble following all those changes on the Internet when I have no time free (work, studies, work, work, studies.. you get the picture). But anyway, I have a facebook page! www.facebook.com/pages/vinegar… - I'll try to share some nice stuff there. I hope.

What's better, I have it since 4 or 5 years and even I was the one who created it and forgot about it. I didn't create it to promote myself actually or collect 'fans', but to act against some art theft (the usual stuff). But it turned out I have to sign up. As I didn't want to create yet another profile on some random page (I know, I know, facebook kinda changed since those years, hard to call it "yet another page" now) I created an "artist account". But it forced to me to make a personal account to be able to use the official one. So I thought "what the hell" and left the site and forgot about it. After some time I created personal account to keep in touch with some friends. Some years passed and just recently, 2 months back or so, I got an e-mail I have a facebook fan page O.o I was kind of surprised, but it seems somehow facebook connected me and my 'artist' profile lately, even though I didn't get any notices all those years before and didn't set it up with the same e-mail. And it also turned out there are quite a few people who liked the page already, even though I had no idea it exists! I was very surprised and happy, even though my first thought was they must be huge balsamic vinegar fans. I am.

Anyway, that solves my problem with facebook! There are many people trying to add me on my personal profile and I always feel bad for not accepting those invitations. I'm sorry, but I'm adding only people I know, with whom I talked. I have quite a few people from DA added as friends, but it's because I talked with them before a lot, not because they clicked "add friend" button on facebook. I still believe there's a difference. Not to mention my personal facebook page is boring. I usually forget to post anything and when I do it's often in polish anyway.

But if you want to be up to with what I'm up to on facebook, or just want to show some general support - my page is the place: www.facebook.com/pages/vinegar… And I'll be very happy to have you there!

Or if you really want to be added as my friend, please, at least tell me who you are (sometimes people change nicknames and I can't remember everyones' name) and why.

Now bare with me when I'll discover stuff like twitter somewhere in next decade! :D Honestly, I need more time to be up to date with what I should be up to date on the Internet.

Okay, now the music. I'll give you some of my recent favourites, you give me some of yours. Just tell me why would I like it.

:pointr: Cibelle - Las Venus Resort Palace Hotel CD - the only mix of bossa nova, jazz and poprock I can stand. And love. Very inspiring. Lots of colours.
:pointr: Marina & the Diamonds - The Family Jewels CD - a mix of electronic music and just very melodic pop / rock songs. One of most energetic albums I heard. Ever.
:pointr: Pati Yang - Silent Treatment or Faith, Hope & Fury CDs - well, I listen to her music ever since Silent Treatment came out. So if you don't know her yet change it now. Some say it's trip hop, I say it's great music with very intense atmosphere in it.
:pointr: Made in Poland - Future Time CD - polish cold wave / post punk classic from the 80s, I never was a big fan of their old stuff. But the new 2009 CD is one of the best things I heard last few years.
:pointr: How to Destroy Angels - well, they just got a first single out. But in case you haven't heard - it's Trent Reznor and his beautiful wife making some really nice music. Worth checking out.

Anyway, I like lots of different music. But if you could recommend me something that is a bit rockabilly, melodic, cold wave, darkwave, electronic or hard rock I'd be really happy :D Just no gothic metal, please. No suffering, emotional, emo, weeping ladies singing in opera voice with violins in the background. I get enough of those just opening DA's main page. And I prefer something that won't put me to sleep in 5 minutes. No offence to anyone

I'm not posting any music links until DA stops treating people like idiots and gives us the option to switch off the "outgoing link" thingy. Some people really do read what they click before they click it. And also when YouTube stops making unavailable all music in my country. So I guess that means I'll never get to post music links.

Many of you probably heard already, but I still can hardly believe the news. Polish president and his wife along with polish top political and military leaders died in a plane crash today. Around 100 people (the list is still not clear) died. I don't think any country had to deal with such a loss before, literally a great part of our government ceased to exist.

For those interested more info here: www.nytimes.com/2010/04/11/wor… and here: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/artic…

I'm still shocked, honestly. I might have not been a big fan of this government in particular, but it doesn't change how much those news moved all my friends and me, especially when I think of families of those who died and many great people, who I respect, who were on board.

My thoughts are with them, this is a real tragedy and tragic coincidence to happen in such an unfortunate for polish history place, yet again.

*edit* Also I want to thank Russia, especially their Prime Minister Putin and President Medvedev, but also all people there who showed so much support towards Poland, even though - as a nation - we are often hard to be liked. I was really amazed by all actions on Russian side.

Hi.

I decided to reactivate my blogspot account. Let's face it - I suck at updating my journal here. I also suck at updating my site. Plus - I don't really want to post random art (and non art) related crap both here and there, so go there to be up to date with my recent sketches, wips, speedpaintings, news and sometimes random thoughts. Not much there for now, but very soon some new stuff is coming.

So, see you there. Oh btw, it doesn't mean I quit DA, I just don't want to mess my DA account with all those little sketches and whatnot I feel like sharing, so if you'll be looking for those + some recent info please check there: vinegaria.blogspot.com

Hi.

Long time no see. For a reason. I'm slowly coming back from the dead. Had some bad stuff happening lately to me and just slowly recovering from it now - just saying for those who were trying to reach me lately. I've been quite away and inactive almost everywhere. I'll try to get back to most of you very soon.

First of all - thank you all so much for all the comments, faves and watches! I feel really great and thankful for all of them and I'm really sorry I can't manage to reply to all of you.

Second - there's an interview with me in Designer's Depot, for those interested, click here! designersdepot.noelevz.com/?p=…

Third - some of my art will be published in two upcoming books, Drakaina's artbook and Exotique 4. Check them out, as well as other Exotique series (1, 2, 3) and Painter book where I'm also featured (by Ballistic Publishing) as they have lots of great arts by many, many artists! Also big thanks goes to Drakaina for being very patient with me coming quite late with my entry for her book.

Fourth - I'm pretty sure I wanted to write something more, but I forgot. Oh well. I guess that's all for now, I hope I'll be able to finish and show you all the personal pieces I have left unfinished for ages.. That is if work and studies will let me do it anytime soon.
