it'd be nice if you read the description this time ;)

this piece was done for cgtalk.com 'master and servant' challenge. i was perfectly aware that my level is not high enough to be even compared to many people there, but decided to enter it because it was the only reason to force me to work longer on a painting than just one evening. and i really want to make a quick progress. i worked on it since 25 april till 17 may.. with many brakes of course.. i think it took me about 30 hours to finish it, excluding concept sketches and such.. the whole trick of this challenge was that you had to send few milestones - including concept sketches, lineart, colorin wip etc..

the painting is actually unfinished.. i didn't have enough time to refine it to be frank (the exam session is coming), so the only part really finished here is the girl in the background (i think i spent 2/3 of all the time on this place, when the rest was really rushed). i know it's really visible. i also don't need a critique on this one. i already know what's wrong here so you're not gonna really help me with that, sorry ^^''

so as long as i don't really like this painting i think (and i can already see) it taught me a lot. that's why i think it's important to send it here, so you can also see as some kind of a level in my progress o.O;;

the explanation of the painting:

the general idea was to place 3 people in there not telling who is the real servant of who. the man seems to be dominant at first but then there is the girl starting to take over control of him. there's also a girl in the background with a funny smile. i wanted her to seem like she's either ignoring the scene or being the real master of these two.. basically i just wanted to leave the interpretation of character's attitude to one's imagination.. as for the animals it should be pretty obvious. the parrot close to the man.. the butterflies flying over the main woman (seen both as a strength and flying-dream and also as feminine unsure nature in general).. and the female lion close to the background woman.. it's pretty obvious i think ;)

media used:

pencil sketch, adobe illustrator to get the perspective correct, photoshop 7, opencanvas 3 and painter 7 for colours (i had to switch, 'cause my photoshop ignores my tablet, oc is the best for lights and details, painter is the best for general colours.. at least that's how it works for me)

references:

this is the place where i have to thank my dear friends (Anna and Ithil) for posing for me. we spent a wonderful evening full of beer and laugh when they were kind enough to pose for me in many various and kinky poses ^_^;;

also - the references were used for animals, sky and the girl in the background. note, that by references i mean - looking at it, not overpainting it, okay? i want to learn to paint, that's why i don't overpaint photos. that would be useless. my usual process when painting with references lately is actually that i print them.. i found out that i'm too lazy to be switching between the programs to look at them XD

I love the man's pose and the way you tied the animals associated with each of the people into their clothing.

This is beautiful, I love the way you've set up all the ambiguities between the people. I love the butterflies at the top, they're so well done!

Wow...You really did concintrate a lot of your time to the woman in the background. The details in that area are amazing!!!
I wish you had more time to work on this picture :( it looks like the rest could have been really awsome too.
