any wacom. even the cheapest one. don't get anything else if you're serious about using it.

bamboo series are a bit worse than intuos, which are considered professional. Graphire are in the middle, but they are no longer produced (you can still get them on ebay or something). Still, even wacom bamboo would be much better than any other average tablet. Wacoms have battery free pen, are much more precise and stable than any other company. Also there's no problem with drivers for them and most gfx programs are written to work with wacoms, they may not support that well any other tablet.

I worked on Graphire for few years (A6 - smallest size), now on Intuos A5 (intuos 3 at home, intuos 4 at work). Even though they are a bit better than graphire I wouldn't say the difference is that big. But the difference between graphire and my previous Pentagram tablet (not Wacom) was HUGE.

So I'd say go get cheapest Bamboo and see how it works for you. They're quite cheap. If it works for you, you can get Intuos soon and have a backup one. If not - you won't spend that much money on it anyway
