Artist's Comments

*EDIT* 09.07.2008
after two years I decided to heavily repaint it. I still liked it, but it looked like crap. Now I'm quite fond of it again.. Here you can see a little animation how it looked before - [link]

I have to say I'm really happy how the face, lights and all other fixed stuff look now.. That's how it should look from the very beginning ;) Additional texture was used for the table this time, from cgtextures.com

well, i wasn't sure if i want to share this one or just wait with it a bit, but decided to show it now..

i have to admit i'm pretty fond of it for this moment. took me bloody too much (and a first concept like that i had about month ago with few old sketches as a base).. finished it in about a week and a half (with few brakes). the walls and bricks for example took me about 2 days and it's not a photo, if you ask, it was done with many, many custom brushes and textures that i made myself from my own photos or from royalty-free stock photos, but none of them resembles any direct pictures, 'cause i completely changed them to paint with them textures.. no ref for the girl, couple of references for fish and heart and peacock feathers (which also took me about a day and a half to finish).. the piranha here is based on a red-bellied one, but her design is, of course, completely mine, i just looked up references to make sure all the anatomy stuff is in place.. the blood was completely hand painted with one small brush used at the beginning (no idea of source, sorry, although it also was changed by me too much to resemble the brush i used)..

as for the concept - well, i don't feel like explaining it too much.. just an idea i had for some time. i don't really like to talk about my concepts.. _^_

work in progress:

initial sketch: 01
first colours: 02
some more progress: 03
some part of walls done (bricks still unrefined): 04
3 steps of painting hair (which i later repainted completely): 05
heart and 2 references i looked at while painting (from sxc.hu): 06
before some final changes: 07

CLOSE UP of the head: face
CLOSE UP of feathers: feathers

the original version has more grain added, but i decided to send the one without grain here... i might change it later..

oh, it's that grotesque and exaggerated on purpose, i hope you'll like it this way, as it fits with me ^_~

Whoa! Just blew me away. I love the concept and all the details you've put into it! I also like how the tines of the fork are blood-free; subtle thing that makes it clear she used her hands.

Oh whoa :giggle:

I think I've been to that restraunt/bar. The sushi there is really fresh, and the calf steak (not bovine) is tender and juicy.
Interesting juxtoposition between one that consumes with no thought and one who consumes the soul with obvious intent. There is a lot of meaning hidden in the piece isn't there? I wonder if that is all that is left of her dinner date? Wrong tangent...I'll leave the rest of the concept discussion alone.
Stylistically, I see three distinct styles worked together here; 2d illustrative (piranha), 3d photo real (feathers, heart, brick and concrete/plaster) and "vin style" painting (character). Each done beautifully in it's own right. It really shows that you can do more than one style and are really a versatile artist. Kudos. It has the feeling of almost being a collage. This is due to two areas...the realistic heart on a painted plate and the wall space behind and to the right of your character.
Ok, concept stuff, as for ChbiUrusai's observation about the fork...well, no blood on the tines and the position of the utensils alludes more to the fact she did use them to eat and not just cut. She may of also used her hand to eat or wipe the blood from her mouth as she has no napkin. She did wipe the blood off, in a deliberate sort of way, on the tablecloth though. I think she stole a few bites of her date('s) meal while he/she was away. Position of the plate and blood, and the way the feathers are laying on the table tell me the food wasn't hers and that she stood up and bent over to eat some of the heart. I could go as far as to say she turned her head to the right and used her right hand to keep her hair out of her mouth while she ate(lack of blood on her right hand and pattern of blood on her face). She shows no remorse in her actions as she watches someone's approach. She makes no attempt to hide what she has done. Ah, artistic forensics...
