Another art challenge by , , For each challenge we interchangeably give ourselves an idea or topic to illustrate and a short, specified time to execute it in whatever shape or form... of course, without knowing what the others are going to come up with.
This week's topic is *vinegar's idea: Maman Brigitte. She is a death loa, the wife of Baron Samedi. For more info check wiki: [link]
EDIT (11.2012) - finally done! You can see the previous version + sketch on my blog, here: [link] + bonus close up is in the gallery.
Mine is a WIP, still very much unfinished. I used some references, especially for the rooster (which was nightmare to get right) and some of *mizzd-stock, although not one photo. She has some great shots of folded materials and hands, so I looked those up as general guidelines. Concepts of outfit, her face and background are, as usual, mine.
Anyway, she's often associated with drinking rum, chilli peppers, colour purple, a scarf and a (bloody) rooster. Or hen. Depending on what I read. Also glasses with usually one of lens missing.
She's also the only fair-skinned loa, often said to have red hair. I thought it'll be more interesting to put her in a southern setting than on a cemetery, even if that doesn't really go 100% in tact with her story. But well.
Oh, she apparently borrowed baron Samedi's hat.
A bigger version is coming up when I'm done with it.
I know this is a bit late but I just discovered your page—awesome job btw, I think this challenge idea that you guys come up with is great. Speaking of, I'm Haitian and I was quite surprised by this particular choice of topic. Of course I grew up knowing about Baron Samedi and Manman Brigitte, but what made you guys choose this? Anyway I think you did a great job, I really like yours!
Thank you! The idea for this topic was mine. I'm always interested in various cultures and, depending on my latest inspiration, I try to dig deeper. I think this time it was mostly reading about Marie Laveau, voodoo, then hoodoo, local culinaries etc. When I'm into something I start digging until I'm deadly tired I think I chose Maman Brigitte as this theme, because when I read of few attributes attached to her: chilli peppers, glasses with one of the lens missing, the rooster, rum, red hair.. I thought that could make a really cool picture, and certainly an original topic.
I actually find the whole theme very interesting and plan to do more pieces inspired by it. But it's the same as I plan more works inspired by polish folklore.. Not enough time yet. There are certain themes that interest me that I would like to deep into more like voodoo/hoodoo, I like how it mixes with Christianity to develop something completely new out of the two, also mexican folk, polish / slavic folk (similar case actually, mixing pagan cult with Christian culture), japanese (but not manga) and some other asian ones.
I also liked the fact that she was the only fair-skinned loa. I guess I'm into contrasts. When I was kid and a big X-Men fan, my favourite one was the only black one - Storm
Beautiful work! She's one of my favorite of the Loa, and it's quite awesome that you've included so many of the items/traits associated with her. Beautiful work with the textures and colors. I love the background; it and the details of her lace are my favorite parts.
I love seeing these art challenges and love the idea... think I may need to find a group to do this with Anyway, yours appeals to me best out of the ones this time around. I love the pose, the detail in the bust of the dress and the hair, and just pretty much everything about this picture. Fantastic.
